Chapter 14

The need for that missing feeling had Briana doing more than enough to get closer to Terrence. She even invited Terrance over to her father’s house for a college send-off party they were giving her baby brother, Benjamin. Although it was their first official date after their one night stand, Terrence still felt it was too soon to meet the relatives, especially Briana’s father. After her father grilled him about his intentions for Briana, Terrence knew he was right about meeting her pops.

Despite Briana’s father offering Terrence his version of a police interrogation about his daughter and wanting to know Terrence’s intentions for her, Briana felt good about their first date. Actually, she hoped Terrence would stand up under her father’s probing questions so she could continue dating him. She loved a man who didn’t take no mess from anyone - including her.

The home of Briana’s father was like every other stucco two-level home in Dayton that Terrence had seen. The semi-big house walled with odd and character artifacts could be easily forgotten after one visit, yet, for some inexplicable reason, the house made Terrence feel very comfortable and right at home.

The diverse crowd outside in the backyard was stepping joyfully, owning the dance floor. African Americans, Caucasians, and Latino brothers and sisters joined forces in a memorable Electric Slide routine to the sounds of R-Kelly’s classic “Step in the Name of Love.”

While the deejay got busy spinning on the turntables, Briana and Terrence shared a lawn table with Casey, Anitra, and Briana’s brother, Benjamin. Once Vanessa arrived with the drinks and began handing them out, Benjamin lit up a cigar and looked at Terrence.

“So, you’re the nigga that’s fuckin’ my sister now?” Benjamin spoke with the big fat stogie poking out of his mouth like he was trying to imitate some mob boss.

“Benji!” Briana gasped, after spitting out her drink, causing Anitra and Casey to giggle behind her embarrassment.

“What I say, Sis?” Benji laughed. “I’m just saying we all grown folks here, Sis. Ain’t that right, Terrence?”

“Of course,” Terrence answered, hating the stench of the damn cigar and Benji’s offensive line of questioning. Terrence figured that Briana had loose lips and all of her girlfriends probably knew about their intimate sexcapades, which didn’t sit too well with him. Being a romantic at heart, the whole ordeal of meeting the family so soon and enduring all these interrogations was killing Terrence. He just wanted to be alone somewhere with Briana, enjoying her company and relaxing, not being grilled by her little brother in front of her all of her girlfriends. Refusing to let the family and touchy situation get under his skin, Terrence just smiled at the awful day he was having. He began reflecting on the fact that Briana could possibly be someone he wanted to fall in love with.

She’s gorgeous, and she’s a doctor with the best pussy I ever had and she could be a potential soul mate, despite her ignorant brother and pops drilling me with questions.
